Rimu Homework Challenge #3

A1. Improve your maths ability: Complete a random 12 x 12 grid in under 3 min

12x12 grid

In room 42 this year we have a homework challenge that is to complete a 12x12 grid in under 3 minutes. The 12x12 grid is when your rule up a grid that is 12 squares by 12 squares and you have to write the numbers 1 to 12 along top and left side of the grid. The 12x12 grid is pretty much a test on your times tables because you write in all of your times tables. Its called a 12x12 grid because there are 12 Columns in the grid and you have to write down all the answers for each times table, e.g you go along the top row first answering all the questions like 1x1 then 2x1 and you go along also answering questions like, 9x8, 10x9 and so on until you reach 12x12. When you finished you have to rase your hand and yell stop. We had 4 minutes to complete it but as you can see I completed it in 2 minutes and 50 seconds. We did this grid every day of the week before we started our proper maths tasks. I took me at least 5 weeks to finally complete it.

I thought of this activity as a brilliant way to start maths and a exilent way to get really fast at your times tables. When I was doing this grid I found a few different techniques on how to do it fast and correctly. I found that if you do your 1's timetables first and then 2's and 3's and so on, and if you do your hardest time's tables first and then go on to you easy one's

Rimu House Swimming Sports

On Friday the 22 of March we had a Rimu House swimming sports at Memorial Park swimming pools.  We had to walk to the pools and that took us a while but it was enjoyable. The races I competed in were 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m backstroke, 25m doggie paddle and the class relay. there were 8 events including, 25m freestyle, 25m breaststroke, 25m backstroke, 25m doggie paddle, 25m dolphin drive, 25m+ underwater swim, 50m freestyle and the class relay. The highlight of the day for me was winning the breaststroke, freestyle and our class winning the relay. I enjoyed all the races cause they were all fun and competitive. A memory I would keep of swimming sports would be watching Mr Mossop swim nearly 50m under water.

Rimu Homework Challenge #2

AS. Improve your study skills: Research Rimu- where do you find it? Why is

it important to Māori? What uses does it have? Why is Rimu the best tree in

the school?

Rimu
Dacrydium Cupressinum

Rimu is a large tree that thrives in our New Zealand forests. It grows throughout the North island, South island and Stewart island.
Rimu is a slow-growing tree, eventually reaching a height of up to 50 m, although most surviving large trees are 20 to 35 m tall. It has a lifespan up to 800 to 900 years. The straight trunk of the rimu is generally 1.5 m in diameter, but may be bigger  in old or very tall specimens.
Historically, Rimu and other native trees such as kauri, matai and totara were the main sources of wood for New Zealand. The inner bark of a Rimu tree can be used to treat burns, cuts and used as medicine. The maori used Rimu wood to make boats, carvings and houses. They also used the trees gum to start fires.
Rimu is the best tree in the school because it outgrows all the trees in the native New Zealand forest and sertinal outlives them all and a Rimu tree is used for many useful things, such as medicine, boats and houses.

Rimu Homework Challenge #1
Create an original artwork using recycled materials

My Playing Card Surfboard

When room 42 got the word that we were doing challenges for homework, and saw the challenge 'Create an original artwork using recycled materials' I knew straight away what I could do. "I could make a cardboard surfboard," but what recycled materials could I use? That evening when I arrived home from school I scavenged through the recycling bin in search for a decent piece of cardboard to use when I saw an old cardboard box with a complete deck of old playing cards in side.

We have learn't many new things in maths such as BEDMAS, Pythagorus theorem, square roots and cube roots, Our topic for this term is on the mans impacted on the environment. We have started reading this story called all summer in a day. From this we have had follow u activities such as summarise, prologue and a visualise. We have also started a Rimu house round robin. We have been split up into 8 teams. We compete against each other in 4 different sports, Softball, Touch rugby, Cricket and Volleyball. I have not yet trailed for any school sports teams but when I do im going to trial for Aims Games Football, Aims Games Trampoline and Boys Surfing. We have been doing P.E as well. Yesterday we did a run called the 12 Minute Run, its when you run between 4 cones spaced 50 meters apart and you have to try run as many laps as you can in 12 minutes. I ran 2.6 km or 2600 m. I think im in for a great year in room 42.
